Taragarh

Taragarh Travel Guide



Location: Taragarh, near Baijnath/Palampur in Kangra District, at 1,000 m altitude at the foothills of the Dhauladhar range.
History: Initially built in the early 1930s as Al‑hilal (meaning “crescent moon”) by the Nawab of Bahawalpur; purchased in 1951 by the Dogra royal family of Jammu & Kashmir (Maharani Tara Devi), renamed Taragarh, and converted into a heritage hotel in 1971 by Dr Karan Singh.
Size & Setting: Spread across ~15 acres of landscaped gardens, surrounded by tea plantations, with sweeping views of snow‑capped Dhauladhar peaks.

September to June: Cool and pleasant weather for sightseeing, walks, tea‑garden visits, and paragliding in nearby Bir-Billing. Avoid peak summer and harsh winters

On-Site & Nearby:
Guided jeep safaris, picnic lunches, campfire dinners with folk performances in Bir.
Paragliding at Bir‑Billing (~20 km away), world-famous thermal site.
Visits to Tashijong or Sherabling Buddhist monasteries set amidst forest walks and waterfalls.

By Road: ~55–60 km from Dharamshala Airport or ~250 km from Delhi. Approachable via Una‑Amb‑Kangra or scenic route via Mandi.
By Train: Nearest railhead at Pathankot or Palampur (11 km away). Local taxis or buses connect onward.
